32nd Annual Eerie Erie 10k, 5K and Goblin Run – October 25, 2014

Time for the world famous Eerie Erie is quickly approaching!

Online registration is now closed – BUT YOU CAN STILL REGISTER ON RACE DAY between 7:30am and 9:00am. Download the registration form here to speed things up.

We have an awesome route this year. Now that street and trail construction has been completed we do not need to do a U-turn for the 10K.  Also, for the first time, we are introducing bib-chip timing to make things easy and clean at the finish line!!

Location: Erie Middle School, 650 Main Street, Erie, CO 80516

Packet pickup & On-site registration: 7:30am – 9:00am

  • We will have light breakfast munchies, coffee & hot chocolate available
  • And don’t forget to pick up your awesome long-sleeve, hi-performance shirts!!  Very cool design this year.

Race Start Times*:

  • 10K Run start: 9:30 am
  • 5K Run/Walk start: 9:45 am
  • Goblin Run start: 10:30 am

The History of Eerie Erie

As I chat with many of our sponsors and community members about the race, they all have such great things to say about how well thought of the race is, and how much it is a rich part of our community’s history.

I’ve only been managing the event for 6 years. May Chapman, my predecessor did a great job for many year prior to me, and that is about all I knew about the history of the event, until I started poking around yesterday in response to an interview I had with Hometown News.  Joanne (our president) informed me of the existence of a 25th Anniversary reflection on the history of Eerie Erie, and that filled in a lot of the blanks for me. And then I remembered this blog entry I did last year that described some of the course changes we made during my 6 year tenure.

If you are curious about how the race has gotten to where it is today, I hope the links above shed a little more light on the subject for you.

About the Eerie Erie Course Changes

This year Eerie Erie celebrates its 31st anniversary. Over the years changes to the
course have been made, sometimes out of necessity and sometimes in response to
your suggestions. In the past few years the course has gone through very active
change. By next year we expect to be very close to our grand plan.
We appreciate your tolerance of change during these times, and we have put tremendous
effort into improving your experience while we implemented the necessary
changes.
In 2010 and 2011 we worked to take advantage of the new Ruth Schrichte trail that
travels along Coal Creek open space, while at the same time routing the course off of
County Line Road that is busy and without a shoulder.
In 2011 and 2012 the home-base for our race, Erie Middle School, went through extensive
renovation and access to parts of the grounds and buildings were closed off
or incomplete.
Now in 2013 we are pleased to add the latest section of the Ruth Schrichte trail to
our course that continues your journey north along Coal Creek and brings you all
the way to Reliance Park. Get the Map Here.

The Town of Erie and their contractors worked extremely hard in the 11th hour to complete our access to the trail which was damaged by the recent floods, and we thank them for their incredible efforts in getting that done in time. This has also enabled us to route runners away from busy Erie Parkway and business entrances. At the same time, we are dealing with a new housing development project that has closed the part of Rd 3 that travels south along and beyond the cemetery. In response to this, we added a turn-around just as you reach the cemetery and routed the course back north on Rd 3 and west on Rd 10.5, both of which offer spectacular views overlooking Boulder Valley and the Front Range.
We thank you for your patience during these changes. We will continue to strive to
improve the course to make it your most enjoyable race of the year, and we welcome

Running Strollers in Eerie Erie?

This question has come up a few times. Here is our thinking…
For the 5K – sure, why not, just start at the back of the pack so you don’t interfere with other runners.
For the 10K – a couple things to think about. (1) Start at the back so you don’t interfere. (2) Go fast enough so you are off the narrower part of the course (Ruth Schrichte trail) by time the 5k’ers get there – this part goes from about 1.0 mile point to about 1.6 mile point, and the 5k’ers will start 15 minutes after the 10k (I will let you do the math). And (3) finally – hopefully you will be fast enough that you won’t delay the end of the 10k, and therefore the awards ceremony with it. If you are in doubt about these things – it would be better if you run the 5k. Let us know if you have other questions.
